KUALA NERUS, 20 May 2019—To ensure that it remains a public university preferred by many school leavers, Universiti Malaysia Terengganu (UMT) has taken various initiatives to increase the social skills of its students and the employability of its graduates especially in the industry.

One of the initiatives taken by UMT to achieve the aim was to organize the Student Research Day 2019 programme at the Sultan Mizan Hall, UMT, for two days ending 21 May. The programme was also held last year, but the scope was widened this year to include postgraduate students.

School of Social Development and Economics Acting Dean Associate Professor Dr Ruhani Mat Min said that the programme was aimed to highlight cross-disciplinary and translational research conducted at UMT and to expose to the local community and industry the ongoing research by UMT students as well as to cultivate interest in research in the local community and industry.

“Students presented their research projects and final year projects in a bid to secure the highest standings in the competition, held in conjunction with the programme,” she said.

Commenting further, Dr Ruhani said that this year the total participants was 1,972, comprising 1,910 undergraduate students and 62 postgraduate students from nine schools and four research institutions. A total of 1,484 participations were from the science field, while 488 from the social science field.

“As for the evaluation, each student was evaluated by three reviewers consisting of two UMT lecturers and one representative from the industry. A total of 736 internal and external reviewers were involved during the evaluation. This year, they completed the poster presentation evaluation online through the use of QR code in line with the paperless practice policy.

Involvement from agencies and industries at the programme also gave us the opportunity to market UMT graduates, and that was one of the strategies we planned for the students,” Dr Ruhani said.

Dr Ruhani said that the Student Research Day @ 2019 programme was considered a success, and she hoped that it would contribute towards the attainment of UMT’s aspiration, vision, and mission.
