In today’s digital world, libelous allegations are being spread using the social media, allowing anyone to read them from anywhere in the world anytime.

Technological advancement has enabled information to be quickly posted on social media platforms such as Whatsapp, Facebook, Twitter, Flicker, Instagram, blogs and so forth.

These prejudices and wild accusations have created tension in the society especially when political differences and competitions for certain positions also come into play.

News in the mainstream media is more factual and credible than the one in the social media, said Datuk A Kadir Jasin, Prime Minister’s Media and Communication Advisor.

He said that those involved in the mainstream media are trained, licensed professionals who are governed by the law and gather information only from reliable sources.

“The mainstream media not only comprises reporters but also journalists and editors that ensure the accuracy of the information and the reliability of the sources,” he said.

He said that the social media is not a news media, but it is a media for socializing and can be used by anyone to say anything, just like at the coffee stalls, so information there should not be taken as facts.

Datuk A Kadir Jasin was present at UMT for the programme Sepagi Dengan Datuk A Kadir Jasin ( A Session with Datuk A Kadir Jasin).
