Most Universiti Malaysia Terengganu (UMT) students have returned home to their families to
celebrate Aidilfitri following the recent announcement by the Ministry of Higher Education.

Although they were allowed to celebrate Aidilfitri in their hometown, it does not mean students are
free to visit every house in their area, said Associate Professor Dr Hafiz Zakariya, Deputy Vice
Chancellor for Student Affairs and Alumni.

Students must be concerned about their safety during the COVID-19 pandemic, he said.

“UMT’s buses took these students back to their hometown because they were not allowed to do so
using public transportation, except flight, for safety reasons,” Dr Hafiz said. “In keeping with the
standard operating procedure (SOP), the buses were first sanitized and all aspects were checked to
ensure smooth and safe journeys.”

“I urge the students to be very disciplined and always follow the SOP set by the government,” Dr
Hafiz said. “This year’s celebration of Aidlfitri is going to be different from those pre-COVID-19
years.”

“Do not get too caught up with the celebration, and observe advice from the National Security
Commission,” Dr Hafiz said. “A lesson can be learned from what has been happening in India, with
people having excessive celebration and consequently spreading the COVID-19 very rapidly.”

Dr Hafiz said it is understandable that students are excited to celebrate Aidilfitri with families,
relatives, and friends after a month of fasting. However, students must accept that the next Aidilfitri
will be the second one celebrated in a new norm, and sacrifice has to be made to curb the spread of
the COVID-19.

In fact, the government has disallowed inter-district travel for four weeks, which means people must
stay at home during Aidilfitri and celebrate it only with other family members.

He added that we should be grateful to still be alive and able to celebrate the coming Aidilfitri amid
all the tests and challenges. This is the time for Muslims to reflect and become closer to their creator
Allah SWT, he said.
