Langkawi, 28 March – Universiti Malaysia Terengganu (UMT) is the only Malaysian public university participating in the Langkawi International Maritime and Aerospace Exhibition (LIMA ’19) held 26-30 March 2019.

The main participants in the biennial exhibition are business delegations from 32 countries and 406 defence and commercial companies.

The highlight of UMT’s participation in LIMA ’19 was the signing of the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between UMT and International Green Training Centre Sdn Bhd (IGTC) to allow greater involvement of the two agencies in the field of green technology and maritime transportation.

Dr Mohamad Rosni Othman, Director of Malaysian Maritime Logistic and Transport Centre (Maltrac), UMT, said that the collaboration would strengthen the role of Maltrac, which would be tasked with training the students and improving their competencies and professionalism in logistics, transportations and green technology.

“This effort indirectly will increase the employability of UMT graduates in the related fields, and will help the government in its effort to achieve the goal of sustainable development,” he said.

The MoU signing ceremony taking place at the Mahsuri International Exhibition Centre was also witnessed by the Minister of Defence Mohamad Sabu and the Minister of Transport Loke Siew Fook.

For the signing, UMT was represented by the Vice Chancellor Professor Datuk Dr. Nor Aieni Mokhtar, while IGTC was represented by its President and Chief Executive Officer Ismail Abdullah.

Ismail said that he hoped the collaboration between IGTC and UMT would assist the latter in producing professional human capital knowledgeable in green technology, so as to be in line with the world-wide adoption of green technology as a way to preserve the environment.

“We will use our expertise to help students change their current practice so that we can achieve the status of a developed nation without abandoning the environment,” he said.

As a university that focuses on marine sciences and aquatic resources, UMT owns a very important asset that is used for research as well as teaching and learning, which is a ship named RV (Research Vessel) Discovery. The ship dropped anchor at the Tanjung Malai waters on 22 March in conjunction with LIMA ’19 and is open to public until the end of the exhibition.

UMT is also a presenter at Pavilion MOT and is hosting a Career Talk on 28-29 March. There will be scientific and research product exhibition by UMT scientists and researchers. UMT academics will be discussing the field of marine sciences that is the niche of UMT.
