Universiti Malaysia Terengganu (UMT) has hit another milestone in relation to its publication achievement when it managed to publish 200 e-books on various academic and corporate themes

The e-book launching ceremony held on 19 June at the Ministry of Education, Putrajaya, was officiated by Education Minister Dr Maszlee Malik.

In his speech, Dr Maszlee encouraged the universities to form collaborations with the Malaysian Institute of Translation & Books so that the e-books and other related materials could be translated into other languages and used as references around the world.

Dr Maszlee also suggested that university publishers produce more books on universal themes as a way to increase the number of readers encompassing all age levels and all parts of the society.

Meawhile, UMT Vice Chancellor Professor Dato’ Dr Nor Aieni Mokhtar said that UMT has always been at the forefront of the digital publication.

“UMT Publisher is now at the same level with publishers from other universities with more experience in the book industry,” she said.

She added that UMT would strive to make its presence more known at the world’s stage and become a hub of knowledge. Thus, the e-book publication was one of the efforts in internationalizing UMT.

All the 200 e-books can be accessed via subscription at overdrive.com or using the PubU application on mobile devices. The platform overdrive.com has over 2 million digital titles and 27,000 subscriptions from libraries around the world.

The platform that can be accessed from anywhere in the world increases the potential subscription for books published by UMT especially those on the university’s niche area.

The e-books are seen as one of the mechanism that may contribute towards the success of Read@Uni agenda by providing more availability of digital reading to students, lecturers, and staff.

UMT has also placed the community as a priority in line with the concept of University for Society. Hence, UMT has agreed to become a pioneer of Desa Digitial (Digital Village), an initiative intended to increase the digital collection at the libraries in the villages.

Also present during the launching ceremony were Deputy Minister of Education, Teo Nie Ching; Director General of Higher Education, Ministry of Education, Datin Paduka Ir. Siti Hamisah Tapsir, and other university publishers.
