Universiti Malaysia Terengganu (UMT) has signed an MOU with Pelabuhan Tanjung Pelepas Sdn Bhd (PTP), a container terminal in Malaysia, to upgrade the system relating to technology and smart port management.

Vice Chancellor Prof. Dato’ Dr. Mazlan Abd Ghaffar said the collaboration between UMT and PTP provides many opportunities that will benefit both parties.

“Among the main components in the agreement is the Work-based Learning that will involve three cohorts.

“The collaboration between UMT and PTP will also be expanded to include other areas in addition to the academic, namely research and development, which will include co-application of grants, article writing, and development of analysis methods for the benefits of both parties.

A university needs to place emphasis on the aspect of empowering graduates in order to produce those that can meet industry’s demands, Prof. Mazlan said.

“UMT has worked closely with PTP since five years ago. Some of the aspects both have planned to be implemented include Structured Internship Programme, Work-based Learning, Industrial Talk, Career Vision, and Industrial Training Programme and Young Talent Development Programme in relation to Port Operations Apprentice Programme.

“These programmes are intended to equip students with knowledge that covers not only academic aspect but also shipping and port industry.

UMT has successfully produced holistic graduates that can contribute towards the development of the industry and the country, Prof. Mazlan said.

“There are more than 100 UMT alumni currently working at PTP holding various posts. This proves that UMT has succeeded in producing graduates that meet industry’s needs and contribute towards the country’s development.

“I believe UMT’s participation in this collaboration will positively impact research outputs, which subsequently will improve the management of ports and the ecosystem of the surrounding communities. UMT always stays true to its slogan that says “Oceans of Discovery for Global Sustainability”, he said.

Set up in 1979 as Fisheries Centre, UMT has gone through several changes to become what it is today, and the university has made a name for itself at various levels through its academic achievements, research, innovation, and student development initiatives.

Among the achievements and recognitions obtained include being ranked in Times Higher Education (World University Rankings), Times Higher Education (Impact Rankings), Times Higher Education (World University Rankings by Subject), QS World University Rankings, QS University Rankings (Asia), UI GreenMetric, MyMoheS, Malaysia Research Assessment (MyRA) and SETARA.
