UMT and PTPTN seal agreement, to focus on students’ financial welfare

Kuala Nerus – Universiti Malaysia Terengganu (UMT) has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the National Higher Education Fund (PTPTN) as part of the effort to improve the efficiency and quality of services especially pertaining to students’ welfare.

The signing ceremony saw UMT Vice Chancellor Professor Dato Dr. Mazlan Abd Ghaffar and PTPTN Chief Executive Officer Ahmad Dasuki Abdul Majid putting down their signatures on the agreement document on behalf of the respective agencies.

Prof. Mazlan in his speech said UMT has agreed to work together to conduct research and develop several new ideas to increase the understanding of students and staff towards the importance of the services offered by the national education fund agency, which allows for society’s betterment in the future.

“Today’s MoU aims to encourage the practice of saving among UMT students through the National Education Savings Scheme, create students’ awareness towards loan repayment, and strengthen research and higher education development to produce quality graduates that will become the next leaders of the country.

“UMT is always prepared to give support and cooperation by providing the infrastructure and the human resources for the effort.”

He said the agreement also involves corporate social responsibility programmes co-organized by both agencies that will benefit graduates and society.

PTPTN also gave away tablets to two UMT students during the signing ceremony to lighten their financial burden. Nur Hafizah Bahru Anuar from the Bachelor of Accounting programme and Raja Halimatun Fikriyah Raja Khairuddin from the Bachelor of Science (Nautical Sciences and Maritime Transport) programme are from the asnaf categories.

Prof. Mazlan added the collaboration is part of the initiatives by UMT as a university that aims to enhance the academic and research fields.

UMT, first set up as a fishery centre in 1979, has progress remarkably and managed to make a name for itself at various levels through achievements in academic, research, innovation, and student development.

Among the recognitions it has received are the inclusion in Times Higher Education (World University Rankings), Times Higher Education (Impact Rankings), Times Higher Education (World University Rankings by Subject), QS World University Rankings, QS University Rankings (Asia), UI GreenMetric, MyMoheS, Malaysia Research Assessment (MyRA) dan SETARA.
