Kuala Nerus 20 July 2022 (Wednesday) – Universiti Malaysia Terengganu (UMT) has entered into a partnership with Sinavax Sdn Bhd to commercialize the Mannheimiosis Intranasal Spray Vaccine (KUSTEMVAC) for use on goats and sheep.

In a ceremony, Sinavax Managing Director Tuan Haji Abdul Rahim Haji Yusoff presented the licensing agreement document to Prof. ChM. Dr. Marinah Mohd Ariffin, Deputy Vice Chancellor of Research and Innovation. Also present were UMT Board of Director member Dato’ Wan Hisham Wan Salleh and principal officers.

Sinavax Sdn. Bhd. is a UMT start-up company that focuses on the development of intranasal vaccines for goats and sheep. The company is led by UMT researcher Prof. Ts. Dr. Mohd Effendy Abdul Wahid and Sina Sterilgamma Sdn. Bhd., a company that has invested in the commercialisation of KUSTEMVAC.

Sinavax has proven the effectiveness of the product when it was administered to goats and sheep in Permaisuri, Setiu, after the animals had been infected with the Mannheimia Haemolytica virus. The administration of the vaccine at the proper time has prevented the farmers from facing a great loss.

Sinavax is in the middle of a discussion with a vaccine manufacturing company in Malaysia to market KUSTEMVAX at its facility in order to meet the cGMP requirements. The move will also allow the product to be easier to obtain for local use and set the product up for entry into the international markets, including Australia, New Zealand, and Arab countries.

About 44.6% of the world’s goat and sheep population are in Asia, where China, India, Pakistan, and Bangladesh have roughly 446 million of the animals, while the number of goats and sheep locally is 371,000. UMT said that strong commitments from its partners have contributed to the success of the university’s product commercialisation activities.
