UMT-Terengganu e-Sailing League (July Series) was back at it again this year. The event was originally scheduled in June but was forced to be postponed to July in light of the Movement Control Order (MCO) 3.0 throughout the country. The MCO prevented the secretariat from being physically present at UMT’s Nautical Science Laboratory, the place that houses the needed facilities for this virtual sport.

Mohd Hafizi Said, Director of UMT Sailing Training Centre, said that the event this year made history with 216 participants, 112 of which were first timers in this national virtual sailing event.

He also added that the e-sailing event first held last year using the application Virtual Regatta was a result of a collaboration between UMT Sailing Training Centre, Terenggnau Wind Surfing Association (T-WinS), and Sports Council of Terengganu.

Virtual Regatta is an application that is officially endorsed by World Sailing to be used to organize e-sailing competitions at the international level. This makes UMT-Terengganu e-Sailing series the best platform for discovering the country’s e-sport athletes in sailing event, Mohd Hafizi said.

“We are currently making an effort to collaborate with the Ministry of Education to organize a national event involving school students all over Malaysia,” Mohd Hafizi said. “It is hoped that through this event talents in virtual sports among students can be discovered.”

In line with this year’s motto, which is “Now Everyone Can Sail”, people from all walks of life had the opportunity to participate in this sailing event regardless of age, gender, and ability. In fact, participation from those in the disabled category during each series so far has been encouraging, Mohd Hafizi said.

Participants who fulfilled all the requirements of the competition were given electronic certificate. Also this time around, mystery gifts were given to the first two winners, Asri Azman and Al Yauma Akma Zulkifeli.
