Kuala Nerus, 3 June – Universiti Malaysia Terengganu (UMT) has been chosen as the strategic partner for Jom Masuk U 2023 (JMU 2023) programme for Zone 5, Eastern, taking place today and tomorrow at Sultan Mizan Hall, UMT.

Datuk Dr. Mohd Zabri Yusoff, Deputy Chief Secretary (Management and Development), Ministry of Higher Education (MOHE), in his speech said the main objective of the programme was to share about opportunities for furthering studies to public institutions of higher learning (IPTA) and public skills training institutes (ILKA).

He added that JMU 2023 organized by the ministry aims to equip SPM and STPM holders, diploma students, even undergraduate students with information about the next studying opportunities.

“JMU is a signature programme held yearly by the ministry. Its Public Institution of Higher Learning Student Intake Division is organizing this year’s programme beginning 20 May until 4 June 2023.”

Meanwhile, UMT Vice Chancellor Prof. Dato’ Dr. Mazlan Abdul Ghaffar said the programme helps universities especially UMT to attract potential students who are looking for courses that meet their preferences. Offering such academic programme is in line with MOHE’s aspiration as stated in the Malaysia Education Development Plan – Higher Education (2015 – 2025) under Shift 10: Transformed Higher Education Delivery.

JMU 2023 has attracted participation from 20 public universities, Department of Polytechnic and Community College Education, four public skills training institutes, 30 private institutions of higher learning, Public Services Department, Malaysian Athlete Career and Education, agencies under the Department of Higher Education such as Public Institution of Higher Learning Student Intake Division (secretariat), Private Governance Division, Education Malaysia Division, Inspectorate Enforcement Division, and agencies under MOHE such as Malaysian Qualification Agency (MQA), Scholarship Division, and National Higher Education Fund Corporation.

There are 498 academic programmes offered to SPM holders and 1,096 to STPM (or equivalent qualification) holders by public universities, polytechnics, community colleges, and public skills training institutions throughout the country.

“UMT has a foundation centre and five faculties that offer a Diploma programme, a foundation programme, 32 undergraduate programmes, 18 master’s and doctorate programmes by research, and 11 master’s and doctorate programmes by coursework.

“UMT offers programmes in the marine field in line with its vision of being a marine-focussed university that is well-respected nationally and globally. It provides natural research stations at Bidong Island, Bukit Kor, Chagar Hutang at Redang Island, Setiu Wetlands, and Kenyir Lake.

“UMT is the only university that owns a vessel for research purposes and teaching and learning, and the ship called RV-Discovery was specially designed for oceanographic and marine science research.

Prof. Mazlan urged students visiting JMU 2023 to take the opportunity to explore the available programmes offered by participating universities and make an informed decision regarding their choice of furthering their studies.

“This programme is very effective in terms of optimizing the cost and giving high impact to participating universities and local communities especially students looking for options to further their studies.

JMU 2023 is an informal interactive medium that allows students, parents, educators, counsellors, and the public to obtain information regarding studying opportunities and financial aids provided by universities and other institutions under one roof.

JMU 2023 ‘s last stop will be the middle zone where it will be held from 4 to 5 June. The closing ceremony will be officiated by Higher Education Minister Dato’ Seri Mohamed Khaled Nordin.
