Kuala Nerus—Sultan Mahmud Islamic Centre, Universiti Malaysia Terengganu, in collaboration with the Student Affairs and Alumni Division, has organised the latest Scholar Talk programme entitled The Philosophy of Islamic Art in Woodcarvings. The aim of the programme taking place 27 April was to provide exposure to the public on the beauty of Islamic art especially on woodcarvings.

The special guest in the Scholar Talk programme was Tuan Adiguru Norhaiza Noordin, a renowned Besut-born woodcarver. Prior to making a stop at UMT, he was on a road tour that started at the National Art Gallery in Kuala Lumpur, then to Universiti Sains Malaysia and Terengganu Museum.

“UMT staff and the surrounding community are fortunate to have the opportunity to meet an artist with extraordinary talent who has been given the title of Adiguru (master) for his contribution in arts and culture,” said UMT Deputy Vice Chancellor (Student Affairs and Alumni) Professor Ts. Dr Che Mohd  Ruzaidi Ghazali in his speech.

“We are thrilled to be able to hear the experiences of someone whose works have been acknowledged at the global level,” he said.

Norhaiza’s works were also displayed at the Islamic Centre for the attendees to view, who comprised the students, staff and people from the surrounding communities.

The Scholar Talk programmes are held at UMT to introduce various established figures who are experts in their fields.

Meanwhile, the holding of the event at the Islamic Centre proved that it is not only a place for religious activities but also a place for the transfer of knowledge.
