Kuala Nerus—Universiti Malaysia Terengganu (UMT) is aiming for Malaysian Research Assessment (MyRA) six-star rating in 2021, said UMT Vice Chancellor Professor Dato’ Dr Nor Aieni Mokhtar today.

Professor Nor Aieni was speaking during UMT MyRA Five-star Appreciation Ceremony at Paya Bunga Hotel in Kuala Terengganu. UMT received MyRA five-star rating in 2018.

Professor Nor Aieni said UMT has announced several strategic initiatives towards improvement in research and innovation, themed “Road to 6 Star MyRA UMT 2021”, and a new research direction based on Quadruple and Quintuple Helix Framework (academics, government, community, industry, and environment).

Research, Development, Commercialization, and Innovation (RDCI) are the measuring stick for a university’s achievement, Professor Nor Aieni said, and UMT as a comprehensive university focusing on marine science and aquatic resources needs to invent new knowledge through research activities and share it with the students, communities, and industries to generate wealth and improve the country’s economy as well as the society’s well being.

“It is important for us to move in unison in our effort to enable UMT’s achievement to be recognised not only at the national level but more importantly at the international level,” she said.

UMT was one of the three public universities selected to receive the MyRA Best Achievement Special Award for2018.

“This achievement shows that UMT is committed to ensuring its research and innovation excellence is at par with other higher education institutions,” Professor Nor Aieni said.

Among the instruments used in MyRA assessment are Research, Development, Commercialization, and Innovation (RDCI) input, output, outcome, and impact, which include several components such as quantity and quality of researchers, research projects, and postgraduate students, innovation, professional services, networking, and facilities.
