Kuala Nerus, 18 April 2020: Universiti Malaysia Terengganu (UMT) today distributed zakat money worth RM1.3 million and laptops to eligible students. The activities took place during a special fast-breaking event with UMT Vice Chancellor organized by Sultan Mahmud Islamic Centre (PISM).

The zakat money, which was contributed by several corporate bodies, was distributed among 2000 Asnaf and B40 students. Additionally, laptops worth RM200,000 were distributed among 100 students. The laptops were sponsored by Lembaga Tabung Haji Malaysia.

According to UMT Vice Chancellor Professor Dato’ Dr. Mazlan Abd Ghaffar, UMT’s student financial aid scheme coordinated by PISM has attracted corporate agencies to contribute to the scheme through their zakat payment. Tabung Haji, through its Iqra’ Programme, has contributed RM750,000.

He added that the COVID-19 pandemic has brought about negative impacts to most sectors, especially the country’s economic sector.

“The groups most affected by the situation are the Asnaf and B40,” Professor Mazlan said. “Students whose families belong to these groups will also feel the impact, as it will be a challenge for them to find adequate financial resources to support teaching and learning activities on campus.

PISM has taken the initiative to help these groups by requesting contributions from various corporate agencies, Professor Mazlan said. Their contributions indicate that these agencies place education as the main element in the development of human capital and that they do not wish for these groups to be left behind.

A total of 70 UMT students from the Asnaf group were presented with Asnaf Volunteer Aid worth RM250, sponsored by Syarikat Perumahan Kinrara Berhad. These students have been involved with Iftar programme held by UMT since the beginning of Ramadhan.

A total of 85 students were presented with Flood Victim Aid worth RM600, sponsored by Syarikat Etiqa General Takaful Berhad. These students are from Pahang, Terengganu, and Selangor, the three states hit by flood recently.

“I thank all the agencies that have contributed,” Professor Mazlan said.

UMT also presented its media partners in Terengganu and Klang Valley with RM10,000 voucher for making the efforts to improve UMT’s image.

“The publicity and coverage has made UMT more well-known as the leader in the field of marine science and aquatic resources, and for that, we thank the media,” Professor Mazlan said. “I hope this partnership will continue well into the future.”
