Universiti Malaysia Terengganu (UMT) has a nature research station at Bidong Island. Field research is conducted at the station, as are practicals for students of marine science, fisheries, and other related fields. Among studies that are being conducted by researchers and students are those focusing on marine ecosystem, various marine organisms, and coral reefs. Several government and corporate agencies choose the station as the location for their scuba diving activities. UMT has recently set up the Scuba Diving Centre to promote scuba diving activities at the island among students and the public.

UMT has also expanded its knowledge exploration to include underwater archaeology. It has identified several 100-year-old shipwreck sites at the island’s waters to be converted into an underwater archaeology training centre. UMT will be working with the National Heritage Department and corporate bodies to set up the centre. The Ministry of Tourism, Art, and Culture has launched a new scuba diving site where 11 mini landmarks from ASEAN countries have been placed.

The 11 mini landmarks are Kuala Lumpur Petronas Twin Tower (KLCC), Sultan Haji Omar Ali Saifuddien Mosque (Brunei), Cambodia Independence Monument (Cambodia), Patuxai Monument (Laos), Indonesia National Monument (Indonesia), Shwedagon Pagoda (Myanmar), Joe Rizal monument (Phillipines), Merlion (Singapore), Wat Arun Ratchawararam Ratchaworamahawihan (Thailand), Tran Quoc Pagoda (Vietnam) and the ASEAN Secretariat (ASEAN) logo.

Other scuba diving locations at Bidong Island are Underwater Gallery, Coral Farm, Christmas Garden, Karah Island, Kerisi Reefs, Tenggiri Reefs, Middle Coral, Gorgonian Garden, Deloh Coral, Skull Rock Island, and other sites, each with its own uniqueness. Scuba diving sites at Bidong Island are one of reasons tourists are attracted to visit Terengganu.
