UMT’S KNOWLEDGE TRANSFER PROJECTS HELP IMPROVE COMMUNITIES’ LIVING STANDARDS

Parit Sulong, 24 July 2022 – Two knowledge transfer projects Universiti Malaysia Terengganu (UMT) are currently implementing in Parit Sulong are validations of the university’s commitment in improving the living standards of the communities in the area. The two projects are Stingless Bee Farming and Giant Freshwater Prawn and Vegetable Crop Farming.

UMT’s efforts have been acknowledged by Higher Education Minister Datuk Seri Dr. Noraini Ahmad. In her speech during the officiating of the community programme, Datuk Noraini said she is proud of UMT’s contributions towards community development in Parit Sulong, Johor, as well as in other places across the country.

“I hope other higher education institutions will also utilize their expertise to help develop the local communities in their areas by means of social innovation approach,” she said.

She added there need to be more community programmes such as the ones UMT are implementing.

“Volunteer community programmes may involve university students as these highly educated group may become role models for the local communities,” Datuk Seri Noraini said.

She also added that these volunteer programmes and activities are keys to the country’s development.

Meanwhile, UMT Vice Chancellor Prof. Dato’ Dr. Mazlan Abd Ghaffar said the Giant Freshwater Prawn and Vegetable Crop Farming project requires only low capital and small open area.

“Both projects are expected to greatly improve the economy of Parit Sulong community in the near future and increase the living standards of those in the local agro-tourism sector,” Prof. Mazlan said.

UMT has stayed true to the concept of “University for Society” by acting as a transformation agent that helps with human capital, economic, and social development of a society, he said.

UMT has been actively implementing various knowledge transfer programmes, translational projects, community services, and research undertakings to impart knowledge and skills to the communities.

Participating in the programme are 50 individuals consisting of veteran soldiers, single mothers, youths, and the elderlies in Parit Sulong.

Held in conjunction with the community programme was an event called Johor Tour with Johor Natives. In this event, 120 UMT students from Johor stayed three days and two nights at three villages, which were Kampung Bintang Peserai, Batu Pahat; Kampung Parit Tengah Sri Merlong, Batu Pahat; and Kampung Sarang Buaya, Muar.

UMT student volunteers organized an educational programme with local students, a knowledge transfer programme with the youths, and the We Care We Love programme with the communities.

In line with the Ministry of Higher Education’s focus, which is “Striving for Community’s Wellbeing”, UMT’s knowledge transfer programme in Parit Sulong has brought the ministry and the communities closer together.
