KUALA NERUS—Universiti Malaysia Terengganu (UMT) has been taking several initiatives in an effort to produce students who excel in academic as well as possess valuable soft skills for the purpose of meeting the demands of the industries.

As part of the strategies to achieve the aim, UMT has provided a platform for the students to gain the experience of working in the industry, which is through the 2U2I programme that is held in partnership with Salihin Chartered Accountant.

The special programme is intended to produce students having a complete package by enabling them to receive exposure to the real work experience while they are still studying at the university.

One of the TAF-UMT participants, Norain Nordin, 21, said that the programme had helped her to increase her knowledge of the real working world, besides improving her communication techniques.

“I joined this programme in the second semester. The programme has helped me to experience for myself the real work and the challenges in the industry. I was also able to learn several applications used by the industry, such as SPS, MyOB, and others,” said Norain, third-year student of UMT’s  Bachelor of Accounting programme.

“In addition, exposure to taxation and direct communications with external agencies have provided me with the opportunity to improve my communication skills,” she said.

Norain was one of the five participants who received the Best Student Award for the Teaching Accountancy Firm (TAF) UMT during the TAF UMT appreciation ceremony and took home RM500 and a certificate.

Also present during the event were Prof. Mohd Shaladdin Muda, Dean of the Faculty of Business, Economy, and Social Development, Dr Salihin Abang, UMT Adjunct Professor and founder of Firma Salihin,  UMT lecturers, and students.
