Kuala Nerus – A team of six Universiti Malaysia Terengganu (UMT) students emerged as champions at an international innovation competition organized by Ocean Affairs Council and the American Institute in Taiwan, Kaohsiung Branch Office, on 25 April. For winning first place, the team took home NT $ 50,000.00 (RM 7,500.00).

The six students who called themselves Serpihan are from the Bachelor of Science (Marine Biology) programme.

The team’s advisor and coach Dr. Maizah M. Abdullah said that Serpihan was the only team from Malaysia that managed to advance to the final round under the Ocean Challenge 2022 category.

“In Ocean Challenge 2022, participants aged 15 – 35 must propose creative solutions, with marine science as the main element, to issues concerning the oceans,” she said.

“I constantly reminded the students that it is not the size and location of a university that are important, but the knowledge it offers, and UMT has proven it belongs in the front line in marine niche not only at the national level but also at the global,” said Dr. Maizah, who is also a lecturer at UMT’s Faculty of Science and Marine Environment.

The Ocean Challenge programme, held since 2019, is a platform for students and the young generation across the world to propose solutions to the ocean crisis.

Meanwhile, Serpihan leader Nadia Umar Ridzuan said that the victory was the team’s gift to UMT. She hoped that the team will be given more opportunities to participate in other international competitions.

Serpihan also includes Brendon Vun Man Fook, Muhammad Faris Hadi Zulkifli, Aizatul Jasmine Azizan, Jennifer Janani A/P Sathiaseelan, and Amanda Fika Kanchan.

In 2021, another student from the Bachelor of Science (Marine Biology) programme, Mogesh Sababathy, was one of the finalists for the Commonwealth 2021 Award. The achievements of the UMT alumni have become an inspiration to other UMT students to be more involved in marine environment programmes at the global arena.
