Most Malaysians are still affected by the Covid-19 pandemic that hit the world two years ago. The post Covid-19 era has seen those who lost their livelihood begin to rise again and find ways to survive.

One of the affected groups is the students, who are faced with financial constraints. Having to be on campus physically, they need additional money to pay for expenses related to the teaching and learning. But their families are still struggling financially, having only begun to be back on their feet to try and improve their quality of lives.

Their hardship however is always in the knowledge of the university’s top management. Through the Student Affairs and Alumni Division, these students’ welfare has always been taken care of through aids programmes that have been carried out.

Recently, through the programme called Jualan Murah Keluarga Malaysia Siswa (JMKMSiswa), or Malaysian Family Cheap Sale for Students, students of UMT were able to purchase daily items and stationery at special prices.

UMT Vice Chancellor Prof. Dato’ Dr. Mazlan Abd Ghaffar said various aids initiatives and programmes have been specially introduced for the students.

“Among them are Covid-19 Special Aids, Learning Aids including laptops and internet data plan, Free Food Aids through AOK and Gerobok Rezeki (Cupboard of Keeps) programmes, Death Aids, and e-Counselling hotline.

“Through the JMKM Siswa Programme held in conjunction with the Malaysia Cooperative Commission (SKM), students of UMT were able to buy daily items at lower prices, and these include personal hygiene products, prepaid top-ups, communication devices, and learning needs.

He said a total of RM558,000 has been spent on the programme that extended help to selected students, and the programme was held in collaboration with various government agencies, cooperatives, private agencies, NGOs, and individuals, who provided sponsorship.

Also present during the launching of the JMKM Siswa Programme was Dato’ Wan Hisham Wan Salleh, Chairman of the Board of Entrepreneur and Cooperative Development and member of UMT’s Board of Directors.

The JMKM Siswa Programme was introduced and launched at an institution of higher learning in the Klang Valley by the Minister of Entrepreneur and Cooperative Development on 19 October 2022.
