A free-food programme to help the students at Universiti Malaysia Terengganu (UMT) has drawn the attention of an outside agency. Co-Op Bank Pertama (CBP), a cooperative banking institution, has decided to take part in the programme by donating food items to the students.

UMT Vice Chancellor Prof. Dato’ Dr Nor Aieni Mokhtar said that UMT appreciated the support towards the noble effort shown Co-Op Bank Pertama, which gave away packed food and dry food items to students during a special event today.

The additional help was much welcomed amid the country facing the Covid-19 pandemic that has negatively affected the incomes of parents of these students, Prof. Nor Aieni said.

“The giving away of free food to these less fortunate students will help to lessen their burden,” she said.

“UMT would like to thank Co-Op Bank Pertama for its involvement and welcomes other agencies or NGOs to come and help these students, especially ones who have been badly affected by the pandemic,” she said.

Prof. Nor Aieni said that the free-food programme, called Act of Kindness-Gerobok Rezeki (AOK-GR), has achieved its aim so far.

“The issue regarding students not able to feed themselves due to financial constraint has no longer surfaced on campus as a result of the free-food programme,” she said.

Meanwhile, the Chief Executive Officer of Co-Op Bank Pertama had positive things to say about the initiative taken by UMT in helping the students.

“From what I see, the Act of Kindness and Gerobok Rezeki project is very noble,” he said. “We at CBP are impressed by the effort taken by UMT to help less fortunate students.”

“Today, it is our turn to help the students and show that we care about their welfare, and it is hoped that this small contribution from CBP will help to lessen some of their burden.”

AOK-GR has been ongoing for the past five years. AOK-GR Corner was set up at the residential college through a partnership with the student cooperative KOSISWA-UMT to facilitate the giving away of food to students. The booth is manned by student volunteers.

Food that includes nasi lemak, fried noodles, and traditional cookies and pastries is placed at the booth and can be taken by students for free.

Another initiative has also been recently introduced, known as Suspended Meal, through a collaboration with the cafeterias at the residential college. Suspended Meal is a concept whereby meals and drinks at the cafeteria have been paid for by certain individuals, and students in need can just take them.
