Universiti Malaysia Terengganu (UMT) received a visit from the Minister of Higher Education Dato’ Seri Mohamed Khaled Nordin yesterday.

The former Johor Menteri Besar was welcomed by UMT’s top management and its principal officers.

As part of his visit, Dato’ Seri Mohamed Khaled was taken on a tour to see the research vessel RV Discovery, the sailing ship operation centre, and the equipment that is used to support the teaching and learning process implemented to produce holistic graduates.

UMT Vice Chancellor Prof. Dato’ Dr. Mazlan Abd. Ghaffar gave a briefing on the sailing sports that UMT students participate in. A team of UMT student sailors made the country proud when they finished third at the International Sailing Competition in South Korea in November last year. The team was the only one from a public institution of higher learning to take part in the race.

Prof. Mazlan also said UMT team and RV Discovery crew are preparing to participate in The 16th Langkawi International Maritime and Aerospace 2023, the country’s biggest maritime exhibition, scheduled to be held in May 2023.

While at UMT, Dato’ Seri Mohamed Khaled also took the opportunity to meet with UMT students, including several from the Disabled category. These students are active in the sailing sports, for which they are trained by the staff from the Sailing Training Centre.

UMT was the first destination in the east coast Dato’ Seri Mohamed Khaled visited after he was appointed as the Minister of Higher Education last year by the Prime Minister Dato’ Seri Anwar Ibrahim.

Also present during the visit, which included a Hi-Tea session with the minister, were UMT Board of Director member Mohd Khairul Hakimi Mohd Nawi, Deputy Vice Chancellor (Research and Innovation) Prof. Dr. Marinah Mohd Ariffin, and Pro Vice Chancellor Prof. Dr. Fauziah Abu Hasan.
