Kuala Nerus, 27 Jun 2022 – Universiti Malaysia Terengganu (UMT) has successfully organized this year’s edition of Student Research Day (SRD), an annual event meant to encourage students to conduct research mostly on their own, instil in themselves a competitive spirit, and think critically.

SRD 2022 marks the fifth instalment of the event since it was first introduced in 2018. Carrying the theme “Living into the Endemic Era of COVID-19”, the event served as a platform for showcasing students’ research and innovation works. These were evaluated by a panel of experts comprising academics and industry representatives.
The posters selected to be presented at SRD 2022 had undergone a screening process earlier at the respective faculties. This was to ensure that the projects showcased during the event were those of good quality and high impact.

The Faculty of Fisheries and Food Science as its organizer, SRD 2022 was held physically at UMT Convention Centre (UMTCC). The two previous editions had to be held online due to the pandemic. The one-day event was participated in by students from 23 academic programmes. The best student for each programme was required to present the research poster in front of 12 guest juries comprising industry people and academics from other universities.

A total of 1303 abstracts on various projects presented at SRD 2022 were able to be produced by students and compiled into SRD2022 book of abstracts, making the event more meaningful.
UMT Vice Chancellor Prof. Dato’ Dr. Mazlan Abd Ghaffar said that the organizing of programmes such as SRD that encourage generation of products and ideas is important in producing quality graduates.

“The main purpose of SRD is not only to cater to the students, but also the lecturers, who serve as the students’ supervisors,” said Prof. Mazlan in his speech during the award presentation ceremony. “Before SRD, their supervision stopped after the undergraduate students finished their final year projects, but with SRD, the research can be showcased, which can lead to the studies being the solutions to industry’s and society’s problems.”

Prof. Mazlan also said that SRD is one of the strategies that will help produce graduates who are holistic and can meet the industry’s needs.

He added that SRD is also a strategy to provide more employment opportunities to the students, since the event is usually attended by the industry people.

“This will help ensure that UMT students will secure employment after they have graduated,” he said.

The winner for Final Year Project 1 (PITA 1) was Mohd Raziq Mohd Nizam from the Bachelor of Technology (Environment) programme. For Final Year Project 2 (PITA 2), the winner was Siti Nur Hanani Zainuddin from the Bachelor of Science (Marine Geoscience) programme. Winners received cash prizes, certificates, and trophies.
