KUALA NERUS — A team of volunteers from Universiti Malaysia Terengganu (UMT) today has successfully distributed aid to the victims of earthquakes and tsunamis that struck the town of Palu, Sulawesi recently.

The volunteers for the humanitarian mission which arrived two days ago together with other agencies had to travel for a few hours before reaching the location and while there they pooled their efforts to build temporary shelter camps.

Dr Riswadi Azmi, Director of Sultan Mahmud Islamic Centre cum mission head, said that the mission was initiated after witnessing the terrible aftermath of the disaster

“We’re very grateful to be able to collect donations totalling over RM20,000 from various agencies including individuals to fulfil the needs of 1,000 affected residents,” said Dr Riswadi.

In addition to giving aid in the form of packed food and basic necessities, the volunteers also conducted spiritual activities and provided motivation to the victims especially the children.

“This is part of UMT’s commitment, to help those faced with hardship in whatever ways, and this form of aid acts as a medium in promoting the beauty of Islam to the world,” said Dr Riswadi.

“On behalf of UMT humanitarian mission team, I thank greatly all all those who have helped to initiate this mission, especially the generous donors. With your support, the mission was successfully launched,” added Dr Riswadi.

Dr. Riswadi hoped that the public would continue to donate so that small boats could be purchased to be given to the fishermen.

“The Islamic Centre is still accepting donations from the public to realize humanitarian mission 2.0, where we intend to purchase small boats to be given to the fishermen who had lost their livelihood after their boats were destroyed by the tsunamis,” he said.
