As the monsoon season ends and April approaches, one recreational fishing activity becomes popular in the East Coast region.

Squid jigging is a popular weekend activity among enthusiasts. It is also one of the attractions that bring tourists to the areas, thereby helping boost the tourism sector.

In Terengganu, favourite locations among squid jigging enthusiasts include the waters of Kapas Island, Marang, Setiu, Dungun, and Kemaman.

The best moment for squid jigging fans is when their squid jiggers catch big-size squids, which they lure to their area by shining the lights into the water.

This kind of excitement is what draws first-timers to try their hand at squid jigging, although they have to spend the night in the middle of the sea and endure being seasick from riding the boat on the wavy waters.

Several first-timers have been presented with the opportunity to experience squid jigging when Universiti Malaysia Terengganu (UMT) organized the event for the first time. A total of 24 students from several universities participated in the activity.

The participants were not only given the opportunity to experience the activity firsthand but they were also taught the proper squid jigging techniques. The two-day one-night event at Bidong Island waters was more like a squid-jigging course.

“We organized the programme to introduce the uniqueness of the South China Sea waters especially the waters of Terengganu to university students,” said Associate Professor Dr. Hafiz Zakariya, Deputy Vice Chancellor (Student Affairs and Alumni), during the programme’s launching ceremony. “Some of these students may act as ambassadors and promote the activity to other students to convince them to come to Terengganu.”

He added that the programme may provide positive impacts on the state’s economic sector in the forms of increased domestic tourism and increased boat rentals.

Squid jigging activity usually begins as early as 3 pm and ends at dawn the next day.
