KUALA NERUS—Assoc. Prof. Dr Hafiz Zakaria has been appointed as the new Deputy Vice Chancellor (Student Affairs and Alumni) of Universiti Malaysia Terengganu (UMT). His appointment took effect 1 December 2019.

Assoc. Prof. Dr Hafiz succeeded Prof. Ts. Dr Mohd Che Ruzaidi, whose appointment officially ended in November 2019.

Assoc. Prof Dr Hafiz began his career as an academician at the International Islamic University Malaysia (IIUM) after completing his PhD at the University of California, Santa Barbara, in 2006.

His expertise in Islamic history and civilization is widely recognized. He was previously entrusted as the Director of the International Institute of Islamic Thought and Civilization (ISTAC-IIUM).

His views on Islamic development and world crises often receive media coverage.

He has been appointed as a panelist at international forums. In addition, he also writes actively for academic journals and conference proceedings.

He is a member of several internationally recognized associations, such as Asian Association of World History, Malaysian Historical Association, World History Association (USA), and Middle East Studies Association (North America).

Assoc. Prof. Dr Hafiz’s appointment as Deputy Vice Chancellor (Student Affairs and Alumni) is hoped to help steer UMT towards higher excellence.
