Universiti Malaysia Terengganu (UMT) has organized a special charity dinner with industry players and UMT alumni who graduated from the marine-focused university since its establishment in the 80s as invited guests.

The charity dinner was held at a popular hotel in the capital city and featured a popular singer in the 90s, Ziana Zain.

Programme director Assoc. Prof. Dr. Mohd Yusof Shuaib Ibrahim said the programme was organized for the first time by UMT Alumni Centre to increase the Alumni Fund.

“The event was held to increase collaborations between alumni and industry players from all levels. The alumni comprise UMT alumni entrepreneurs in the country, alumni chapters, and UMT alumni. The aim is to fulfil the fourth OS initiative contained in the 2023-2027 UMT Strategic Plan.

“We are currently in the process of establishing the UMT Alumni House, and the financial contribution received during the dinner will be used to help realize the mission of all alumni and allow them to give back to the university.

A launching gimmick for the UMT Alumni House was held during the dinner. The house will be built inside UMT campus and will become a one-stop centre for students and alumni.

Dr Yusof Shuaib, who is also Alumni Centre Director, said the Alumni House will provide a special space to encourage entrepreneurship among students and allow students’ activities.

“The house will serve as a source of income for the Alumni Centre. It will have spaces for students’ activities including entrepreneurship. It will help to bring the alumni and industry players closer and facilitate their involvement in student-enhancement programmes.

Deputy Vice Chancellor (Student Affairs and Alumni) Prof. Dr. Mohd Izani Mohd Zain said the holding of the event is inline with the initiatives contained in the HEPA Initiatives he has introduced recently.

“In an effort to enhance the students, nine HEPA Initiatives have been established, and the Alumni Centre focuses on the 8th Initiative, which is increase contributions to the alma mater by alumni.

“Among the initiatives involved are generating income in a more aggressive manner and establishing an alumni house as a symbol of pride for UMT alumni. The Alumni House will be built to serve as a one-stop centre for the sharing of expertise and information among alumni and the industry,” he said.
