KUALA NERUS – Communities around Universiti Malaysia Terengganu (UMT) need not worry about their safety in light of the government’s latest decision to open a Covid-19 Quarantine and Treatment Centre (PKRC) inside the campus. The centre that has been set up at the hostel will cater to low-risk Covid-19 patients.

UMT’s PKRC Director Dr Muhammad Lutfil Zulkafa said that the opening of PKRC will not spread the infection to UMT staff and students, and also the local communities.

Dr Muhammad Lutfil was speaking during a special talk series called Bicara Khas: PKRC@UMT that was broadcast online.

“The selection of UMT as PKRC was made only after careful evaluations regarding risks and access,” Dr Muhammad Lutfil said.

“The campus has tight security, and the routes used by UMT staff are different from those used by PKRC frontliners and the ambulances.

“The setup of PKRC will not interfere with the day-to-day activities of the university, as we use specially assigned gates and routes, and the hostel is fully guarded”.

At the same time barbed wire has been put up around PKRC to ensure no flouting of SOP or trespassing, he said.

Dr Muhammad Lutfil said that the patients will be required to remain in PKRC hall at all times. Also, physical barriers have been installed to ensure that there are no close gathering among the patients during treatment.

Also speaking during the event was Dr Saifur Rahman Muhammad, Terengganu Deputy Health Director. He urged the communities to comply with the SOP and adopt the new norms.

“We are still battling the Covid-19 pandemic, so everyone including those at UMT must follow the instructions,” he said. “Open all windows at the office for better ventilation, and avoid using the air-conditioners as a closed-ventilation system increases the risk of infection”.
