The oceans play an important role in people’s lives. Water from the oceans, when evaporated by the Sun, becomes water vapor that later drops down to earth in the form of rain that benefits the living things on land.

The oceans are so precious that researchers and experts become worried when these expansive bodies of water demonstrate an increase in temperature, prompting them to seek the causes and the solutions.

The oceans are not only a source of sustenance, but they also offer another means of transport that facilitates international trading. The oceans contribute greatly toward nations’ economic sectors and the spread of religions and cultures.

In appreciation of the oceans’ contributions, the world has dedicated 8 Jun every year as the World Oceans Day.

Environmental activists have been using various methods to create awareness among people of the importance of caring for the oceans, but these have not been enough to reduce ocean pollution from a year to the next.

Every year, the beaches are filled with plastic wastes, including plastic bottles, straw, food packaging, and polystyrene containers.

These wastes will drift to the oceans and pose a danger to marine lives. They may eat these wastes, thinking they are food, and subsequently die. When too many of these animals lost their lives, their species may become extinct, which will disrupt the marine ecosystem.

The World Oceans Day is celebrated to remind and create awareness of the importance of caring for the oceans to ensure the marine ecosystem is sustainable, as the oceans are an integral part of people’s lives.

Universiti Malaysia Terengganu (UMT) is a university with a focus in marine science and aquatic resources, and the university constantly organizes campaigns on environmental conservation.

In conjunction with the World Oceans Day celebration, UMT through its Institute of Oceanography and Environment (INOS) is organizing World Oceans Week (WOW’22) during which several activities are held that aim to disseminate information regarding the oceans’ ecosystem and sustainability.

The activities, carried out as part of UMT’s University Social Responsibility (USR), began 6 June and will last for a week.

The activities include expos, beach clean-up, beach soccer tournament, ketupat weaving workshop, and ocean-themed colouring contest.

WOW’22 drew the attention of Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency, who agreed to be involved in the event as it is centred around the oceans theme, which the agency is part of.

Th event aims to bring people and science closer together. It may help reduce the threats towards the oceans, making them more sustainable.
