Professor Dr Mazlan named UMT Vice Chancellor

KUALA NERUS – Professor Dr Mazlan Abd Ghaffar has been appointed as the new Vice Chancellor of Universiti Malaysia Terengganu (UMT) to succeed Professor Dato’ Dr Nor Aieni Mokhtar, whose tenure has ended. His appointment took effect 2 August 2021.

 

The announcement was made by the Minister of Higher Education Datuk Seri Dr. Noraini Ahmad through a statement published 1 August 2021.

 

Professor Mazlan has a background in fisheries science, which is in line with UMT’s research niche that centres on marine science and aquatic resources.

 

His appointment was made in view of his extensive experience in research and innovation, a portfolio he held during his post as Deputy Vice Chancellor for Research and Innovation at the same university, the statement said.

 

Among his notable achievements were getting the Institute of Tropical Aquaculture and Fisheries (AKUATROP) officially recognized as a Higher Institution Centre of Excellence (HICoE) for Research and Innovation; leading a Long-term Research Grant Scheme (LRGS) project, titled Ocean Climate Change: Potential Risk, Impact, and Adaptation towards Marine and Coastal Ecosystem Services in Malaysia, in collaboration with several public universities; and setting up a method of generating university’s fund through commercialization of intellectual properties.

 

Professor Mazlan’s involvements at the international level include being a member of several international organizations including Ichthyological Society of Japan, Marine Biology Association of United Kingdom, Asean Fisheries Society, and Taiwan Oceanography Society.

 

Meanwhile, Professor Mazlan said that he will continue with the agenda of further strengthening UMT’s niche area of marine science as part of the effort to position UMT as an excellent marine-focused university.
