UMTJ, LKIM collaborate to strengthen country’s fisheries industry

Kuala Nerus, 15 January 2024 – Universiti Malaysia Terengganu (UMT) through its subsidiary company UMT Jaya Holdings Sdn Bhd (UMTJ) signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Malaysian Fisheries Development Authority (LKIM) to develop, strengthen, and promote the country’s fisheries industry.

Drone technology, Internet of Things (IoT) sensor, and Super Apps will be used to strengthen Malaysia’s fisheries industry, especially in terms of the environment, social, and governance (ESG) and sustainability, safety and health, productivity improvement, additional income, and operations cost saving.

UMTJ Chairman Dato’ Dr Din Adam said UMTJ and LKIM will become technological pioneers in the fisheries sector in Malaysia.

“The initiative is taken to ensure the fishermen will improve their knowledge and productivity and the fisheries industry in Malaysia will remain sustainable.

“UMTJ and LKIM will generate Big Data to enable more accurate information and analysis to be shared with all parties involved. This will ensure the safety of fishermen and increase their productivity and catch,” he said.

Also present at the signing ceremony were LKIM Chairman Muhammad Faiz Fadzil, UMT Vice Chancellor Prof  Dato’ Dr Mazlan Abd Ghaffar, UMTJ CEO Dato’ Dr Ahmad Ramzi Mohamad Zubir, Akuatrop Sdn Bhd Chairman Dato’ Munir Mohd Nawi, and LKIM Director General Hamdan Mamat.

LKIM delegation was also taken to see a tilapia farming site that uses UMTJ canvas and UMT Rapid Biofloc, a technological innovation by UMT researcher Assoc. Prof. Ts. Dr. Nor Azman Kasan.

The technology that has been internationally recognized enables biofloc to be formed as early as five days, as opposed to 30 days using a conventional method.

Rapid Biofloc may save food and operations cost by as much as 30 percent.
