Kuala Nerus, 6 JULY 2022- Concerned with the welfare of students following the price hike of most products especially food items, Universiti Malaysia Terengganu (UMT) has introduced several initiatives that use the taglines #UMTPrihatin and #HEPACakna to help students survive on campus.

Vice Chancellor Professor Dato’ Dr. Mazlan Abd Ghaffar said the Office of Student Affairs and Alumni (HEPA) has identified students from the B40 group and offered financial assistance through Student Aid Fund and Asnaf Zakat Fund. The amount of fund distributed between January and June 2022 has amounted to RM542,165, which has helped 7,324 qualified students.

He also added that the university has waived the rent for on-campus cafeterias for six months from July to December 2022 in an effort to enable owners to continue selling food without increasing the prices.

“Working together with Student Representative Council (MPP), UMT is monitoring the prices as well as the quality the service at the cafeterias to ensure that there are no unreasonable price increases,” Professor Mazlan said.

He also added that the university is introducing UMT Family menu comprising selected meals that cost at most RM3.50 per serving at on-campus cafeterias as another initiative to ensure each student can afford the meals.

UMT is also taking an initiative to help reduce the financial burden of students who are living off-campus by distributing raw ingredients for use in food preparation.

The Act-of-Kindness and Gerobok Rezeki Mutiara (AOK-GR) programmes, which have operated on donations from corporate agencies and individuals and have provided free food to students since 2017, continue to provide free food and items to students living at the hostels. As another effort to reduce students’ financial burden, some food items are sold to them at cost. Students need to bring their own containers to obtain the food.

“It is hoped that the initiative taken by UMT can help students cope with the increased cost of living due to a hike in the prices of raw materials,” Professor Mazlan said. “They need to focus on their studies and campus activities, not on their financial constraints.”
