Universiti Malaysia Terengganu (UMT) has signed a Memorandum of Agreement (MOA) with Terengganu Strategic & Integrity Institute (TSIS) to carry out research on the development of an east coast logistics hub in Terengganu.

According to UMT Vice Chancellor Professor Dr Mazlan Abd Ghafar, the project is intended to contribute towards the economic growth of Terengganu.

“UMT is a university that focuses on maritime affairs, and it has related research assets and expertise,” Professor Mazlan said.

“The project will be carried out to identify the main factors that influence the development of a logistic hub in the east coast of Malaysia, study the connection between ports and a logistic hub and the implication of a logistic hub towards the development of the east coast region, and recommend strategies for setting up a logistic hub in Terengganu.

“The findings will be used as guidelines in the preparation of the implementation strategies for the logistic hub in Terengganu so that the development in the region will be more effective and sustainable,” Professor Mazlan said.

He added that UMT through the Faculty of Maritime Studies has successfully produced the Journal of Maritime Logistics (JML) for publishing quality academic papers on logistics and maritime management, and this effort will contribute towards the university’s increased visibility.

“JML will become a platform for gathering academic articles on topics related to issues in the maritime industry especially on shipping, ports, and other areas such as logistics, policies, operations, management, and navigation that is linked to three main agendas, namely marine activities, seaports, and rural areas.

“As a public university that has become a point of reference, UMT is ever ready to collaborate with outside agencies for the sake of progress that will eventually provide positive impacts towards the community and the state,” Professor Mazlan said.
