UMT RECEIVES RM1.3 MILLION ZAKAT MONEY TO HELP POOR STUDENTS

Kuala Nerus – Universiti Malaysia Terengganu (UMT) has received RM1.3 million zakat money from corporate bodies, and it will be used to help the poor students to ensure that they will be able to complete their studies interruptedly.

UMT Vice Chancellor Professor Dato’ Dr. Mazlan Abd Ghaffar expressed his gratefulness and thanked the corporate bodies for their contributions.

“Praise Be to God, UMT has received zakat money from seven corporate bodies, which are Lembaga Tabung Haji, Etiqa General Takaful Berhad, Majlis Agama Islam dan Adat Melayu Terengganu (MAIDAM), Perumahan Kinrara Berhad, Bank Kerjasama Rakyat Malaysia Berhad, Bank Islam Malaysia Berhad and Affin Islamic Bank Berhad,” he said.

“UMT has also received an additional RM50,000 from Etiqa General Takaful Berhad to be allocated to UMT students who were affected by the flood. This contribution will be of great help to UMT students from poor families.”

The money was presented to UMT by the corporate representatives through Datuk Seri Dr. Noraini Ahmad, Higher Education Minister, who was at UMT on 28 January to attend several events, namely Program KPT PrihatinMajlis Sanjung Budiman, and the officiating of UMT’s Institute of Marine Biotechnology (IMB) building.

The zakat money will be allocated to 2279 UMT students from poor families.

Also in attendance were Dato’ Professor Dr. Husaini Omar, Director General of Higher Education; Professor Dr. Fadzli Adam, Acting Vice Chancellor of Universiti Sultan Zainal Abidin; representatives from government agencies; and representatives from the corporate bodies.

The Program KPT Prihatin is an initiative from the Ministry of Higher Education to help students from the B40 group and those affected by disasters.

This year, the programme also provided aids to the communities that were affected by the flood.

Under this programme, UMT and UnisZa have worked together to distribute more than 1500 hampers to flood victims in Terengganu.

Datuk Seri Dr. Noraini also officiated the new IMB building. A major part of the building is occupied by research laboratories, which were completed on 8 November 2018 and began to be used in stages starting early 2021.

There are 11 laboratories that are used for biotechnology research. One of them, the Bioinformatic Laboratory, was set up as part of the research collaboration between UMT and Ghent University of Belgium, and another was set up as part of Joint-Academic Centre Marine Studies programme with the Ocean University of China.
