Kuala Nerus – Saripah Embong, a teacher, has been announced the winner of Universiti Malaysia Terengganu (UMT) Alumni Icon Award for 2021.

The announcement was made during an event organized for the first time by UMT Alumni Centre as a way to acknowledge alumni who have contributed to the country in their respective fields of expertise.

Saripah graduated in 2005 with a Bachelor of Food Science (Food Service and Nutrition).

The teacher who is ending her tenure as a government servant next year said she never expected to be announced as a distinguished icon, the highest recognition awarded to an alumni during the event.

“Thank you UMT for the recognition,” she said. “I am thrilled and never thought I would be selected as the award recipient.”

“Although I am a teacher, I like to study as it gives me a sense of satisfaction.

“UMT lecturers were very helpful, and they even encouraged me to continue with my study although I was at the age of 40.”

For winning the award, Saripah received a trophy, certificate, and cash prizes, which were presented by Mohd Khairul Hakimi Mohd Nawi, member of UMT Board of Director.

Meanwhile, UMT Vice Chancellor Prof. Dato’ Dr. Mazlan Abd Ghaffar said that UMT is on the right track based on the KPIs outlined in UMT’s Strategic Plan 2018-2022.

“Different strategic objectives have been outlined with regards to future alumni, young alumni, and senior alumni,” he said.

“Praise Be to God, the Alumni Centre has achieved the KPIs every year. Congratulations to the director, Prof. Dato’ Dr. Shaharuddin Abdul Hamid, and the rest of the staff and Deputy Vice Chancellor of Student Affairs and Alumni.”

Several other alumni icon awards were presented during the event, including for academic, public management, entrepreneur, and industry.
