Kuala Nerus, 18 Feb – The 2019 Universiti Malaysia Terengganu (UMT) Vice Chancellor Mandate that was held at Sultan Mizan Hall carried the theme Melonjak Wibawa UMT ke Arah Kesohoran Ilmu Kelautan (Making UMT Renowned in the Field of Marine Sciences). The theme encompassed UMT’s aspiration to improve its visibility in the niche area of marine sciences and aquatic resources.

UMT Vice Chancellor Professor Dato’ Dr Nor Aieni Mokhtar in her speech said that outstanding and competent staffs are the keys for UMT to achieve excellence and fulfill its vision and mission.

“Awards won by UMT staffs in research and other events whether at the national or international level in 2018 serve as proofs,” the Vice Chancellor said.

The Vice Chancellor added that in line with the success achieved, the university would be focusing on several initiatives in 2019 including enhancement of UMT administrator leadership development programme, aided by WeLeadUMT system that would be developed for the specific purpose.

She also said that the scope of MS ISO certification would be widened to include all services provided at UMT. To boost UMT Education 4.0, a few new initiatives would be introduced this year including forging collaborations with private institutions of higher learning (IPTS) having the same niche.

In line with 2018-2012 UMT Strategic Plan, student development initiatives would be carried out involving ten high impact programmes. For UMT niche area enhancement, 2019 initiatives outlined a few programmes such as Sea Survival, Monsoon Beach Challenge, IPT Sailing Open and others.

To enhance knowledge transfer activities and industrial networking by all departments, UMT would implement star rating and ranking for each department for Community and Industry Cooperation Programme Assessment to measure the impact of the programmes implemented. Existing Knowledge Transfer and Industrial Networking programmes would be enhanced and could be implemented at the international level.

The Vice Chancellor also said that UMT, through a collaboration between Sultan Mahmud Islamic Centre (PISM) and UMT Bursar, would streamline the management of fund at PISM under a package called ZAWIN, which was the acronym for Zakat, Waqaf and Infaq. This move was made to ensure that the fund could be managed effectively for the benefits of the campus community especially students.

UMT web site would be made available in six languages, namely English, Malay, Mandarin, Tamil, Arabic, and French, to make it more informative and more interactive in an effort to enhance the image of the university.

In line with the YBM KPM mandate that was based on knowledge, industry and humanities, all programmes planned need to be implemented systematically and must be able to fulfill the 2019 UMT mandate which was “MELONJAKKAN WIBAWA UMT KE ARAH KESOHORAN ILMU KELAUTAN” (Making UMT Renowned  in the Field of Marine Sciences). It is hoped that aspiration contained in the 2019 Mandate could be appreciated and implemented by all UMT campus community collectively and that the resulting outcomes could benefit and lift UMT in the global arena.
