MAT 2022 Recognizes Excellent Performers, Names “Kelulutologi” Best Scholarly Book

Kuala Nerus, 12 September 2022 – Universiti Malaysia Terengganu (UMT) today held the Majlis Anugerah Tahunan (MAT), its annual award presentation ceremony, with the theme “Exploring Potentials, Hoisting Excellence.” The event was held to give recognition to the academic and non-academic staff of the university for their excellent performance in 2021.

According to Vice Chancellor Prof. Dato’ Dr. Mazlan Abd Ghaffar, this year’s theme reflected the fact the UMT community is special as each member always strives to find opportunities for achieving excellence.

One of the awards given out was Best Scholarly Book (Science), which went to Prof. Dr. Shamsul Bahri Abd Razak for his book entitle “Kelulutologi – Merungkai Misteri Kelulut, Alam dan Kehidupan Manusia.”

The book details his experience being involved in stingless bee research for more than ten years. It describes the characteristics of stingless bees and their roles in the sustainability of human lives and the environment. The award-winning publication also recounts his experience travelling to Nusantara countries to obtain more information about the Indo-Malaya stingless bees.

The book filled with beautiful pictures of stingless bees is suitable to be made as a reference by not just academics but the public, including stingless bee entrepreneurs and enthusiasts. The book has been reprinted three times.

Earlier, the book had won the National Book Award 2022 for the Nature and Research category.

According to Prof. Shamsul Bahri, the two awards are a special gift to all the players in the stingless bee industry, as they have been his inspirations all this while.

He said the award has motivated him to continue being active in exploring the world of stingless bees.

Meanwhile, Professor Dr. Yusliza Mohd Yusoff, Deputy Dean (Talent & Research) of the Faculty of Business, Economy, and Social Development, was the recipient of the Overall Academic Leadership Award.

The award is given out to recognize the academic staff who have displayed excellence and leadership in teaching and learning, research and innovation, knowledge transfer, and holistic academic leadership at university, national, and international levels.

Her contributions in the field of Sustainable Human Resource Management through publications, networking, and research have propelled UMT to an international level.   

UMT acknowledged 184 staff with awards of four categories, including Excellent Service Award, Excellent Service Special Award, Vice Chancellor Award, and Talent Recognition Award.

Professor Mazlan said he hopes the awards will become the motivation for the staff to achieve excellence in all aspects.

He added that in order to be more excellent, the staff need to be more proactive and adapt to the current needs in the higher education sector. Technology and ICT must be applied optimally in each delivery service, especially in teaching and learning and other administrative matters.

The event at Sultan Mizan Hall was also attended by members of the university’s board of directors, principal offices, and invited guests.
