KUALA NERUS—Universiti Malaysia Terengganu reflected its intention to improve the teaching and learning methods to further attract students’ interest through the sponsoring of 2018 Innovative Teaching and Learning Practice Competition by the Academic Planning, Development and Quality Centre.

A total of 65 innovation projects entered the competition, 33 of which were transformative projects without the use of technology and 32 with the use of technology.

The competition that was held for the first time at UMT became a platform for discovering hidden talents and for promoting the use of innovative ideas in teaching and learning among the lecturers, so as to fulfil the needs of the students and to enhance their learning experiences.

UMT Deputy Vice Chancellor Professor Ts. Dr Che Mohd Ruzaidi Ghazali said that the competition allowed the lecturers to present their creative and smart ideas and share them with others so that everyone can conduct their teaching more effectively and impactfully.

“Innovations in teaching and learning do not mean that we must create new methods; they can include improvements we apply to existing methods,” Professor Che Mohd Ruzaidi said.

The holding of the competition was in line with the agenda of the country to apply innovations especially at public universities. In addition, the competition was also a proper mechanism for identifying those talented lecturers and let them be recognized at a higher level, Professor Che Mohd Ruzaidi said.

He added that the teaching and learning innovations was one of the evaluation criteria for the Anugerah Akademik Negara (National Academic Award), a yearly event sponsored by the Ministry of Education to give recognition to university lecturers for their excellence.
