One of the aims of establishing universities is to provide services to the society. Universities are referred to when issues and problems related to the country’s development and human capital need to be solved.

Universities are expected to transform every level of society through certain processes such as knowledge transfer programmes. These programmes play an important role in the ratings of universities. As such, universities and the community must maintain the close relationship in order for these processes to continue.

Various knowledge transfer programmes have been implemented by Universiti Malaysia Terengganu (UMT), including during the times of the pandemic.

“At UMT, each department plays a role in contributing to the community based on the expertise it has,” said Deputy Vice Chancellor of Academic and International Prof. Ts. Dr. Mohd Zamri Ibrahim in his speech during a recent ceremony that saw UMT and Scouts Association of Terengganu exchange letters of intent.

“This contribution comes in the form of social services known as University Social Responsibility (USR). UMT implements USR to transfer knowledge to surrounding communities.”

Prof. Zamri added that knowledge transfer programmes are carried out in various forms whether hands-on or through digital platforms.

“These include workshops, courses, consultation, and sharing of UMT research outcomes,” he said.

The collaboration between UMT’s Institute of Tropical Aquaculture and Fisheries (AKUATROP) and the Scouts Association of Terengganu will focus on the farming of giant freshwater prawns and freshwater fish.

The project will be implemented in Bukit Sawa, Marang. The location is currently being used to plant rock melons and it has a pond suitable for the project.

Through knowledge transfer projects, UMT has successfully helped low-income communities especially the B40 group generate additional incomes.

Among proven projects are the farming of giant freshwater prawns and tilapia involving Kampung Raja community, the release and conservation of giant freshwater prawns involving the community of Sungai Nyatoh in Setiu, the production of soft-shell crabs involving the community of Kampung Mangkuk in Penarik, the farming of sea bass involving Maahad Tahfiz Mutiara in Kemaman, and the farming of Siamese fighting fish involving schools around Terengganu.

UMT is also actively involved in conservation of animal, flora and fauna species that are facing extinction, such as turtles, nemo fish, pangolins, and orchid.
