KUALA NERUS—Universiti Malaysia Terengganu (UMT) for the first time entered into an agreement with Korean agencies and industries when it signed a Memorandum of Agreement (MoA) with Korea Marine Equipment Research Institute (KOMERI)-SAMWOO Immersion-Busan Techno Park (BTP) to become their strategic programme partner.

Professor Ir. Dr Noor Azuan Abu Osman in his speech said that the plan for collaboration was first initiated when Professor Dr Mohd Norsani Wan Nik was at a conference in Busan, Korea, as an invited keynote speaker.

He also said that the Industry Centre of Excellence (ICoE-Maritime Cluster) and KOMERI had collaborated since 2018. In fact, two MoU’s were signed 27 February this year, which became the springboard for the collaboration between UMT and Korean agencies and industries leading to the MOA signing.

As part of the agreement, KOMERI will provide equipment and software related to simulation and augmented reality and technical assistants for Virtual Reality (VR) on 15 June this year.

“The facilities will enable Maritime Technology students and Nautical Science and Maritime Transport students to receive excellent training, which will increase their employability after graduation. The facilities can also be used to train maritime industrial staff in related fields.

In addition, teaching and training equipment worth over USD170,000 is based on leading technology that complies with Industrial Revolution 4, enabling smart partnership between the two parties.  

Professor Noor Azuan said that continuous collaborations with Korean agencies and industries would enable UMT to widen its involvement in university-industry partnership which would improve teaching, training, and research through the transfer of the latest technology in line with Malaysia’s Industri4WRD: National Policy.   

He said that Korean Marine Equipment Research Institute – SAMWOO Immersion – Busan Techno Park would provide the best support for the development of ship making, R&D institutions, offshore maritime, and companies in Malaysia.

The MoA signing ceremony saw Professor Noor Azuan signing the documents on behalf of UMT and Busan Techno Park Director Dr Kwanghae Won on behalf of the agency.

The event held 13 June at Suria KLCC, Kuala Lumpur, was also attended by Director of Industrial Relations Division at the Ministry of Education, Professor Ts Dr Arham Abdullah, and representatives from both agencies.
