Kuala Nerus 20 July 2022 (Wednesday) – Universiti Malaysia Terengganu (UMT) received a royalty payment from a company it signed an agreement with for commercialisation of a product developed by one of its researchers.

One Team Networks Sdn. Bhd. through its Managing Director Lim Chee Hwa presented the payment to UMT Deputy Vice Chancellor (Research and Innovation) Prof. ChM. Dr. Marinah Mohd Ariffin.

UMT and One Team Networks signed a licensing agreement in December 2019 for the commercialisation of Aedestech Apps by One Team Networks. Since then, the company has been actively marketing the product on a large scale. The product was developed by Assoc. Prof. Dr. Mustafa Man, UMT researcher specializing in mobile app development, to facilitate monitoring of Aedes mosquito eggs using image processing method.

Within two years, One Team Networks has made RM677,639.00 from the sales of the product. As per the agreement, UMT received a royalty payment of RM20,329.17, which will be shared between the university and the researcher. One Team Networks expects the product to penetrate both the local market and international market, especially in Asian countries.

Efforts to boost commercialisation activities are needed to help the university cover some of the costs and become less dependent on the government, which is in line with Malaysia Education Development Plan 2015-2025 (Higher Education), Prof. Marinah said.

Also present at the event were UMT Board of Director member Dato’ Wan Hisham Wan Salleh and UMT principal officers.
