KUALA NERUS—Through a programme held at Universiti Malaysia Terengganu (UMT), a group of participants with disability gained business knowledge that will assist them in achieving financial stability in life.

The programme involving 30 participants from Persatuan Orang Kurang Upaya Anggota Terengganu (POKUAT), or the Association of the Physically Disabled of Terengganu, emphasized several elements of business administration and also introduced a method of urban farming, hydroponic, as one of the ways to generate income.

During the programme, the participants were briefed on business ethics, administration, operations, marketing, financial management, and urban farming business plan. The programme was based on several modules involving in-class sessions and hands-on.

The programme was part of a project by a team of 12 UMT researchers under the Knowledge and Technology Assimilation Grant (KTAG) Scheme. Project leader Assoc. Prof. Dr Hafiza Aishah Hashim said that the programme was one of several social responsibility programmes for Master of Business Administration (MBA) students at UMT. A total of 17 MBA students were involved in the programme.

“Having this knowledge will help the disabled start their own businesses that will give them means to financially support themselves,” Dr Hafiza said.

Dr Hafiza also said that her team would continue to monitor the progress of the participants’ businesses and be ever ready to provide expertise and consultation if needed.

The programme received support from several agencies including Terengganu Incorporated Sdn Bhd, Sultan Mizan Royal Foundation, Terengganu Department of Agriculture, Terengganu Farmers’ Organization Authority, DIY Hydrophonic, Noor Arfa Batik, and Scout Inn Resort who contributed through their corporate social responsibility programmes.
