UMT collaborates with Tourism Malaysia to promote EduToursim

Putrajaya, 16 November 2021 – Universiti Malaysia Terengganu (UMT) will be offering its service to the Malaysia Tourism Promotion Board as part of a new collaboration between the two attract more tourists and at the same time intensify the environmental conservation campaign.

The collaboration was formalized during an event at UMT’s Strategic Communication Centre in Putrajaya today.

UMT Vice Chancellor Professor Dr Mazlan Abd Ghaffar said that UMT has clear aims when conducting scientific and social science research on marine aspects whether on or off campus.

“Tourism activities are important, as they help improve the country’s economy.

“It is part of UMT’s priorities to be involved in community activities through which it can share knowledge directly or indirectly to the people.

The collaboration will have a big impact on the reinforcement of tourism activities, both domestic and international.

“As part of the MOC, several strategic projects and programmes have been drafted, including joint research between UMT and Tourism Malaysia.

“Through research, we can promote entrepreneurial culture, create more job opportunities, develop new tourism products, and help improve the quality of life of the communities.

Professor Mazlan added that UMT is ready to help strengthen the EduTourism sector.

“With this collaboration, EduTourism can be offered to local and international tourists and this can also help promote the uniqueness of marine tourism in Terengganu.

“Among UMT research initiatives that can be highlighted are Turtle Lab and SEATRU Volunteer Programme, Beting Lintang Rush Handicraft Programme under the Mek Flora Setiu project, Coral Restoration Workshop, Dive Heart Special Ability Diver and other programmes carried out by UMT researchers at four UMT Nature Research Stations on Bidong Island, Chagar Hutang Redang Island, Kenyir Lake, and Setiu Wetland.

According to Professor Mazlan, the collaboration will further boost research initiatives, benefit both parties, and bring the tourism sector to greater heights.

UMT became the first university to have been certified as Diveheart Adaptive Diver Buddy Team (ADB). Diving activities are carried out at UMT Marine Nature Research Station at Bidong Island.

Another recognition received by UMT is its name being included in the Malaysia Book of Records as the first university in the country to obtain the ISO 9001: 2015 (Quality Management System) for these scopes: Management of Training Related to Scuba Diving Licensing Course, Educational Services at the Foundation, Diploma, Undergraduate, and Postgraduate Levels, Research Management, and University Support Process.
