Online fraud cases have not shown any signs that they are on the decrease. A total of 10,000 cases of online fraud or more popularly known as scams have been reported in 2022. The figure has increased due to several factors, such as the advancement of information access through various digital sharing platforms.

Universiti Malaysia Terengganu (UMT) has taken the initiative to highlight the issues. The university has organized a programme called Town Hall Discussion: Scammers Getting Smarter.

Among online frauds committed by scammers are online product sales, online gambling, financial loans, guess and win, and fraudulent criminal charges.

According to Deputy Vice Chancellor (Academic and International) Prof. Ts. Dr. Mohd Zamri Ibrahim, the programme was jointly held by UMT, Royal Malaysia Police (PDRM), and Malaysia Crime Prevention Foundation (MCPF).

“One of the focuses of the town hall programme was to create the awareness among all including students, the public, government and private staff, and the community on the danger of the scam activities,” said Prof. Zamri during his speech on behalf of UMT Vice Chancellor Prof. Dato’ Dr. Mazlan Abd Ghaffar.

“UMT is also helping out with educating the society especially the students on how to be safe from such fraudulent schemes.”

He said that the effort to fight against criminal activities needs to be carried out collectively through strategic collaborations with the authorities and NGOs to prevent the cyber crimes from becoming uncontrollable.

“The programme was also intended to create awareness among students of the danger of scammers’ activities,” he said.

“To all parties, I hope that we can give our high commitment and dedication in supporting the big-scale eradication of scams.”

Also present at the programme were Police Commissioner Dato’ Aidi Ismail, Director of the Department of Crime Prevention and Community Safety in Bukit Aman Dato’ Sri Wira Ayub Yaakob, Senior Deputy Chairman of Malaysian Crime Prevention Foundation Dato’ Dr. Mustapha Ahmad S Marican, MCPF Terengganu Chairman Senior Assistant Commissioner Dato’ Wan Rukman Wan Hassan, Terengganu Deputy Chief of Police, and state department heads.
