KUALA NERUS – Universiti Malaysia Terengganu (UMT), in collaboration with Sultanah Nur Zahirah Library (PSNZ) and Sultan Mahmud Islamic Centre (PISM), have successfully launched the first ever Read@UNI UMT 2019 campaign during an event that also included a Book Review slot for the book ORANG TERENGGANU: Asal Usul, Arus Hidup dan Arah Tuju (THE PEOPLE OF TERENGGANU: Origins, Life and Moving Forward).   

Carrying the slogan “With Knowledge We Lead”, Read@UNI is one of the agendas by the Ministry of Education, Malaysia, to increase reading activities among the society, with the programme being in line with the intention of achieving the status of reading nation (#DekadMembacaMalaysia)

This agenda is in support of the government’s aspiration to become a Reading Nation by 2030. In line with that, the reading campaign was given a breath of new life and renamed Read@UNI. Various programmes have been organized by UMT to realize the aspiration of the government.

According to Professor Dato’ Dr Nor Aieni Mokhtar, UMT Vice Chancellor, the launching ceremony held today was to show the commitment of UMT management and staff in the government-initiated campaign, in addition to introducing the list of activities that would be implemented to make Read@UNI UMT a success.

“Among the programmes to be carried out by UMT beginning 2018-2020 were reading campaigns guided by UMT Reading Culture Cultivation Strategic Plan (2018-2020),” she said.

“In addition to promoting the development of information and its access, reading materials available for UMT community will be improved, and Reading Icons will be appointed among UMT staff to become role models to other to cultivate the love for reading,” the Vice Chancellor said.

The activities required continuous commitment from all at UMT and would be monitored by the established committee to ensure that the agenda could be achieved, the Vice Chancellor said.  

A Book Review slot for the book ORANG TERENGGANU (THE PEOPLE OF TERENGGANU) was also held during the event, as one of the activities for Read@UNI UMT and to be followed with other similar programmes. The editor of the book, Professor Dato’ Muhammad Abu Bakar, was the special guest invited to provide his insights and review of the book. The moderator for the event was Datuk Mohd Nasir Hj. Hamzah, Media Karangkraf Deputy Chairman.

Also present at the programme were representatives from state government agencies, NGOs, UMT Principal Officers and Senior Officers, and UMT campus community.
